Occupational summary 

Data analysts ascertain how data can be used in order to answer questions and solve problems. Data analysis is a process of requirement-gathering, inspecting, cleansing, transforming and modelling data with the goal of discovering useful information, informing conclusions and supporting decision-making. Data analysis has multiple facets and approaches, encompassing diverse techniques under a variety of names. In today’s world, data analysis plays a crucial role in making decisions more evidence-based and helping organisations operate more effectively.

Knowledge:

Data Analysts will develop an understanding of relevant legislation and organisational policies for the safe and secure use of data. They will learn the principles of the data life cycle, types of data, and the differences between structured and unstructured data. They will understand data structures, database design, and user experience in the context of analytics. They will identify data quality risks and know how to address them, define customer requirements, and combine data from multiple sources. They will also learn statistical principles, analytical methods, organisational tools, data architecture, and the ethical considerations involved in data use.

Skills:

Data Analysts will demonstrate the ability to use data systems securely and in line with legal and organisational standards. They will carry out all stages of the data analysis lifecycle, applying data classification, statistical methods, and predictive analytics. They will analyse varied data structures, assess the impact of user experience, and address quality risks. They will gather and apply customer requirements, evaluate data sources, and follow architectural standards. They will use a range of analytical techniques to identify trends and patterns, convert data into clear visual outputs, and choose the most suitable tools for each task. They will also communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

They will approach tasks logically and analytically, identifying root causes and lasting solutions. Entry requirements

  • Apprentices seeking to join the data pathway can speak to ATAC to determine which level will be most suitable for them, depending on prior experience and qualifications. 

Progression routes

  • Successful apprentices can progress onto higher-level data apprenticeships.
