Occupation Summary
Process leaders undertake and direct production activities and operations, and deliver against core key performance indicators (KPIs). They effectively lead and manage large teams, providing technical or specialist input and direction to their own teams and to others.
Typical jobs include: Process lead manager, process leader, production lead, section leader.
Knowledge:
Process leaders will develop a comprehensive understanding of production and manufacturing principles, including planning, resource procurement, and operational efficiency. They will be skilled in budgeting, cost control, and lean practices to drive continuous improvement and quality assurance. Their knowledge will encompass health, safety, environmental and legislative compliance, alongside sustainable practices. They will apply project management, data analysis, and problem-solving techniques, and use performance and people management theories to motivate teams. They will align team activities with organisational goals, leverage individual strengths, and manage stakeholder relationships through effective communication, negotiation, and influence, supporting data-driven decisions and strategic change.
Skills:
Process Leaders will demonstrate the ability to lead and optimise production operations by managing resources, adapting to changing schedules, and driving continuous improvement in quality, cost, and efficiency. They will solve problems using data analysis, implement sustainable changes, and ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards. Through effective use of project management tools and KPIs, they will deliver on budget targets and operational goals. Leaders will recruit, develop, and motivate teams, managing performance, industrial relations, and promoting equality and diversity. They will lead change with clarity and adaptability, communicate effectively across all levels, resolve conflict, and foster collaboration. They will use strong analytical skills to present compelling insights to support informed decision-making and organisational success.

Entry requirements
- Apprentices will already hold a level 3 process technician or manufacturing qualification, or have equivalent relevant experience.
- Apprentices will also typically hold a Level 2 qualification in English and Maths prior to taking end-point assessment.
