Level 6 Science Industry Process and Plant Engineer (SIPPE)

Helping design the manufacturing process for advanced therapeutics and complex medicines.  

Occupational summary 

Science industry process and plant engineers (SIPPEs) are involved in process design and manufacture of biological technology or consumer products using solid, liquid and gaseous media. They will apply their knowledge of engineering principles to implement and develop new processes or plant and to support product development, ensuring that the plant, equipment, and manufacturing assets are monitored and optimised to support the current and future processing operation, while offering best value to the organisation.  

Typical jobs include: Process engineer, maintenance engineer, process control engineer, process safety engineer, chemical engineer, project engineer, biochemical engineer, plant engineer.

Knowledge:

Science industry process and plant engineers will develop a strong foundation in core engineering principles, including mathematics and science, and apply them to their area of specialism. They will understand the manufacturing processes specific to the science industry and be proficient in computer-aided design, engineering, and informatics tools. Their knowledge will encompass engineering project management, regulatory frameworks, and industrial finance, including capital and operational expenditure for project feasibility and tender evaluation. Engineers will be aware of their role within the business environment, adhering to ethical standards and codes of conduct, while also applying principles of safety, sustainability, and quality management systems such as GMP, QC, and QA.

Skills:

Science industry process and plant engineers will demonstrate the ability to control major accident hazards and ensure health, safety, and environmental compliance within their area of responsibility, meeting targets while adhering to company procedures and legislation. They will competently plan and execute engineering tasks using appropriate methods, and support the evaluation, installation, and commissioning of projects to enhance process performance. Working autonomously, they will analyse and interpret engineering data, clearly communicating findings using relevant technologies. Engineers will apply continuous improvement techniques, support the integration of new technologies, and use creative problem-solving to challenge assumptions and drive innovation. They will effectively plan and prioritise tasks, monitor progress using project planning tools, and evaluate alternative approaches to optimise outcomes.
